Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department – Forestry – (1) Full-time Position – 40 hours/week (days 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.).

The Forestry Division is seeking a qualified candidate to fill one Arborist vacancy. Appointment to job classification will be based on the following criteria. The City of Portland, also known as “Forest City”, is offering a unique opportunity to join a strong team of skilled Arborists as they maintain Portland’s beautiful tree canopy. This position performs skilled arboricultural work, including aerial work in trees by climbing with various tree climbing systems and aerial lifts. Such duties include: tree planting, tree pruning, heritage tree maintenance, tree and stump removal, along with related care and maintenance of trees such as controlling invasive tree pests. The Arborist III position performs highly skilled work in the care and maintenance of trees and includes the supervision of the work of crews engaged in various types of tree work. Performs various types of tree work, such as pruning, removals, cabling and bracing in trees by climbing with ropes and an aerial bucket. May train others to correctly perform these tasks or supervise these operations in the absence of the Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Operation of a dump truck and various types of Forestry equipment, such as an aerial bucket, pulp loader, stump grinder, chain saw, hand saw and chipper and may train and certify others in the operation of this equipment. Performs general maintenance on tree maintenance equipment. Plants and fertilizes trees and landscaping. Supervises a work crew in caring for trees. Participates in snow removal operations. Performs related work as required.

Requirements of Work: Extensive knowledge of arboricultural skills and of occupational hazards and safety requirements. Ability to climb trees. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, officials, co-workers and general public. Skilled in the proper use of ropes, saddles, climbing hooks and related aborcultural tools (including hand saws, pole pruners, chain saws). Thorough knowledge of various knots used in roping, sharpening of tools and the care of ropes and safety equipment. Physical strength and agility necessary to perform the essential functions of the work under exposure to varied climatic conditions. Ability to work in close proximity to overhead utilities. Knowledge about OSHA requirements for Arboriculture and electrical safety (EHAB). Thorough knowledge of tree and shrub identification, tree physiology, disease and insect identification. Ability to perform basic maintenance on forestry equipment. Ability to supervise forestry work crews in all aspects of their duties. Prior supervisory experience.

Necessary Requirements: Must possess Maine Arborist License (landscape and utility). Must possess Maine Pesticide Applicator license (right of way 3A and 6A-6D). Successful completion of departmental certifications that demonstrate the mastery of advanced aborcultural skills and equipment operation. Must pass Electrical Hazard Awareness Program exam. Must pass one or more of the following: landscape course, aborcultural course, or ISA climbers course. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.

Labor & Trades union – Grade 19 - $873.60/week, plus a $1.00/hour stipend for all hours worked.
