Many structural defects that cause branch breakage and storm damage later in a tree’s life can be minimized by pruning trees when they are young. Learn how to evaluate a young tree’s form and begin selecting branches to prune to improve form. Discussion will include how to reduce codominant stems through subordination and the importance of maintaining a central leader with well-spaced small branches. Pruning young trees, especially street trees, can be one of the best investments of time and funding.
