Inventory Arborist – Brooklyn, NY (Posted 3/8/2017)
Davey Resource Group is seeking an Inventory Arborist.  This position involves tree inspection and
evaluation for the presence of the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB), field data collection of tree and
site information on handheld computers regarding tree species identification, and DBH measurement.
The collected data will be used by the United States Department of Agriculture to detect all ALB
infested trees in order to eliminate the infestations.

Position Requirements: A two-year degree in forestry, urban forestry, horticulture, arboriculture,
plant biology, conservation, or environmental science or related fields is preferred.  Applicants must
have excellent tree identification skills.  Computer literacy is required since the work involves the use
of advanced technology equipment such as handheld computers, pen-tablet computers, GPS
equipment and GIS tree management software.  A valid driver's license, good driving record, and
ability to read/follow maps are also required. Additionally, experience identifying damage in trees
associated with the Asian Longhorned Beetle is a plus.

Physically, the work requires the ability to thoroughly survey and inspect trees for signs of the Asian
Longhorned Beetle (ALB) and associated damage all day long. This work will occur along city streets,
individual residences, woodlots and wetlands. Specific task training is provided. Ability to work
outside in all weather conditions around wildlife, in rugged terrain is imperative. Excellent
communication skills and the ability to work independently are also required.

Duties: The Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) Program, through the Massachusetts

important role in exotic pest detection in Massachusetts.  Primarily, the incumbent will be responsible
for installing and servicing insect traps in the field, carrying out insect and plant surveys, and
sampling plant material to be tested for plant diseases. This position will require working in a variety
of environments including local parks, farms, agricultural fields, groves/orchards, storage sites,
nurseries, industrial sites, forests, ports of entry, etc. Incumbent will be responsible for collecting
insect and plant specimens, and recording data. Some data collection will require the use of GPS,
PDAs and data management systems.  Work will require extensive travel in Massachusetts.
Incumbent will work independently, and as part of a team.
Qualifications: Applicant must have experience performing the duties described above or have
completed coursework above high school that includes scientific or technical courses such as biology,
entomology, ecology, botany, agriculture, etc. Applicant must have experience with spreadsheet and
